“I feel we have all the conditions to defend our title and we are also aiming to work hard, have a good preparation and train a lot to maintain that title.”

Leomon Moreno is set on the 2018 International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Goalball World Championships after leading the Brazilian men’s team to the Americas title in 2017 following a much-celebrated 8-3 victory over the USA.

The 25-year-old scored 16 goals during the competition, including five in the final. “It was great to beat the team that had defeated us at our home Paralympic Games the year before,” he said.

“It served as redemption for us as well as reaffirming our quality on the world goalball scenario.”

He also highlighted the importance of the Americas Championships in helping grow the sport across the continent.

“I think it is very motivating that more teams are developing. And for the goalball elite is important to have an event in a year without many competitions.”

Now, Brazil are training hard for the World Championships in Malmo, Sweden, from 3-9 June.

“Our preparation is gradual. We always try to prepare ourselves from year to year, always doing our best and training hard,” said Moreno.

“We always seek to be innovative in our practices to develop our qualities as much as possible and reach the Worlds well prepared.”

As the defending world champions, Brazil will be the team to beat in Malmo. Rio 2016 champions Lithuania, USA and hosts Sweden are also ready to top the podium.

“I feel we have all the conditions to defend our title and we are also aiming to work hard, have a good preparation and train a lot to maintain that title,” added Moreno.

“That is our goal and as long as we have the strength get ready and find all the ways to succeed.

“Our Confederation is supporting us and in March we will take part in a competition with many of the top teams, which will definitely help us ahead of the Worlds.”
