Another five outstanding performances are featured in August's Athlete of the Month nominations
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has revealed the shortlist for the Allianz Athlete of the Month for August, and the public can now vote for the winner on www.paralympic.org.
The nominations are:
Ntando Mahlangu, RSA, athletics
The 15-year-old swept all four of his events at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships. He won the men’s 100m, 200m, 400m T42 and long jump F42-F47, breaking the 100m world record set by Germany’s Heinrich Popow.
Curtis McGrath, AUS, canoe
McGrath defended his title by winning the men’s KL2 at the 2017 International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Para Canoe Championships. The Paralympic champion also added the VL2 title to his name, totaling six world titles in his career.
U Cheol Park, KOR, wheelchair rugby
The 18-year-old was integral for South Korea at the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation (IWRF) Asia-Oceania Championship. South Korea fell to New Zealand 44-41 in the bronze medal game. Park was named on the All Tournament team in the 2.0 sport class and received the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Emma Wiggs, GBR, canoe
The veteran continued her dominance in the women’s KL2, winning her fourth world title at the 2017 ICF World Para Canoe Championships.
Dashun Zhan, CHN, table tennis
The unranked player went undefeated throughout the 2017 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Para Table Tennis Asia Championships. He defeated the No. 1 player in China’s Ningning Cao to win gold in the competition’s biggest shock. Dashun also won gold in the men’s team class 4-5 event.
The public has until 12:00 (CEST) on Tuesday (12 September) to vote for the athlete they want to be the Allianz Athlete of the Month for August 2017 via the www.paralympic.org homepage.
The nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) and International Federations (IFs).
The 2017 Allianz Athlete of the Month winners so far are:
• January – Jeroen Kampschreur, Netherlands, alpine skiing
• February – Veronica Vadovicova, Slovakia, shooting
• March – Maria Paula Barrera, Colombia, swimming
• April – Jean Niringiyimana, Rwanda, taekwondo
• May – Evan Medell, USA, taekwondo
• June – Alfie Hewett, Great Britain, wheelchair tennis
• July – Petrucio Ferreira, Brazil, athletics
