Egypt are always hopeful of bringing home gold when Randa Mahmoud is competing. But, after three years staying undefeated, she had to settle for silver at the 2018 African Championships after being beaten by Nigeria’s Loveline Obiji in the women’s over 86kg.
The last time Mahmoud had not topped the podium was precisely at the previous edition of the Africans in 2015 on home soil in Cairo.
In between, she claimed multiple titles.
After taking silver at both Beijing 2008 and London 2012, she finally climbed onto the top step of the Paralympic podium at Rio 2016.
She also took gold in three of the four World Championships she competed in, most recently at Mexico City 2017.
