Winter Paralympic debutant Theo Gmur dominated the highly-competitive men’s alpine skiing standing events at PyeongChang 2018.
The Swiss took no less than three gold medals in the giant slalom, super-G and downhill on South Korean soil. He was chosen to be his country’s flagbearer at the Closing Ceremony of the Games.
Before PyeongChang 2018, he also claimed the World Cup crystal globe by finishing atop the overall standings.
As a result, he was named Swiss Para Athlete of the Year in 2018. But few had bet on Gmur enjoying such a successful season, especially after his training was affected due to a glandular fever [mononucleosis] in mid-2017.
Gmur learned to ski at age three in Nendaz, Switzerland. His hometown is a ski resort, where he says almost every child takes up snow sports at an early age. His parents encouraged him to practise sports. He ended up with skiing just like his brother Thomas.
Gmur has hemiplegia because of an oedema he sustained at age two.
