Poland’s Adrian Castro is one the dominant forces in the men’s sabre category B who won his first Paralympic medal at his second Paralympics in Rio.
In 2015, he was named the Polish Athlete with an Impairment of the Year following a hugely successful 12 month. After wining three golds and a silver over four World Cup events, he polished off his season with the world title at the World Championships in Eger, Hungary.
The Worlds final in the men’s sabre category B was an all-Polish showdown, with Castro facing fellow countryman Grzegorz Pluta. The favourite going into the match, Castro was pushed hard by Pluta but proved himself the stronger fencer with a 15-13 victory. Ukraine’s Anton Datsko shared the bronze-medal position with China’s Yan Ke Feng.
Prior to 2015, his only previous successes had been an individual sabre B bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships and a silver and bronze in individual sabre B and team sabre B respectively at the 2014 European Championships.
Having finished 11th on his Paralympic debut at London 2012, Castro was hoping for greater success at Rio 2016. A poor seventh place finish at the European Championships was not ideal, but at his second Paralympics he claimed bronze after defeating his teammate Grzegorz Pluta.
