Borislava Peric-Rankovic is a three-time Paralympian who has won numerous Paralympic, world and European medals during a glittering career. She finally added a long-awaited world singles title last October in Lasko, Slovenia.
It was about time for the 43-year-old, who seemed destined for success after an outstanding 2018 season that saw her win five gold medals at tournaments. The year before, she captured her fifth European Championships singles title.
The Serbian currently sits as world No. 1 in the women’s singles class 4, and looks determined to make it back-to-back Paralympic golds at Tokyo 2020.
At the Rio 2016 Paralympics, Peric-Rankovic achieved a major career milestone when she won the singles title, her first after three Games appearances. She defeated China’s Miao Zhang 3-2 in the gold medal match. Alongside teammate Nada Matic, she also won team silver after losing out on gold to China. The singles title was a long-awaited victory since taking up the sport in 2002 and making her senior international debut a year later.
In her Paralympic debut at Beijing 2008, Peric-Rankovic took home singles silver, a feat she repeated at London 2012.
She has had plenty of success in regional Championships, and World Team Championships, holding the titles from 2017 and 2014. But the 2018 Worlds is her opportunity to complete her golden collection in the singles.
She was named the 2015 Female Para Table Tennis Star of the Year at the International Table Tennis Federation [ITTF] Star Awards.
