He began his international involvement with the sport as a referee in 1987, going on to officiate one year later at his first Paralympic Games in Seoul 1988. He later served as Chairman of the World Technical Commission, before taking the role of IWBF Secretary General in 2018.

Among his many contributions, Norbert was instrumental in shaping the development and governance of wheelchair basketball, ensuring its continued growth and global impact. His leadership, vision, and tireless efforts in advancing the principles of inclusion and fair competition will always be remembered.

Andrew Parsons, IPC President, said: “It is with profound sadness that we learn of Norbert’s passing and our thoughts and sympathies are with his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.

His absence will be profoundly felt, and our thoughts are with those who knew and loved him during this incredibly difficult time.

“Norbert’s impact on wheelchair basketball went far beyond his role; he was a guiding force, always striving to elevate the sport and support those around him. He played a key role in modernising our sport’s structures, ensuring its growth, and strengthening its place within the Paralympic Movement.

“His legacy will live on through the generations of athletes, referees, and administrators who continue to benefit from his vision and leadership. For all that he has given to wheelchair basketball, IWBF will forever be grateful. While we mourn his passing, we also honour the incredible legacy he leaves behind."
