Paris 2024: 2.15 million tickets purchased for Paralympics, exceeding Rio 2016 sales
The Opening Ceremony on 28 August had a peak TV audience of 22 million in France 31 Aug 2024
More than 2.15 million tickets have been sold for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, setting the stage for a record-breaking Games. After the first day of competition in the French capital, the Paris 2024 Organising Committee has sold more tickets than the Rio 2016 Paralympics.
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, which take place between 28 August and 8 September, feature 549 medal events across 22 sports. A total of 2.8 million tickets are on sale, starting at EUR 15.
With 2.7 million tickets, London 2012 is the number one Paralympic Games in terms of sales, followed by 2.1 million tickets sold at Rio 2016.
Craig Spence, IPC Chief Brand and Communications Officer, said, “We have gone above (our sales for) Rio 2016 today. Beijing 2008 had more spectators, 3.4 million, however, only 1.6 million of those (tickets) were sold. I’m confident Tokyo 2020 would have been our first sold-out Paralympic Games without the pandemic.”
Etienne Thobois, Paris 2024 Director General, said, “It’s a fantastic result – 2.1 million tickets is a lot of tickets. To compare, it’s the same number of tickets for a major event like a Rugby World Cup. It’s five Roland-Garroses at once. It’s a huge number.”
Record-breaking Games
The Opening Ceremony on 28 August had a peak TV audience of 22 million in France. It was held outside of a traditional stadium setting for the first time, with athletes parading from the Champ-Elysees to the iconic Place de la Concorde.
According to Google Trends, interest in the Opening Ceremony was 7 times that of Tokyo 2020.
“A lot of those people wouldn't have engaged with the Paralympic Movement before. At the Paralympics we build momentum as we go,” Spence said.
“I'm seeing elements of London 2012 here, in how the city is embracing it. We are going to do something very special here.”
