Meet Lizzie – the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games Mascot
Lizzie, the mascot of the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, is a frill-necked lizard, best known for her strength, determination and ability to survive in even the toughest conditions. She helped showcase the performance, power and pride of Para athletes to Australian and international audiences.
Accompanied by her Olympic counterparts Syd, Olly and Millie, Lizzie proved to be very popular among the public and made a return as the Australian Paralympic Team mascot later on. She was also featured on collectable merchandise years after the Sydney Games, such as the limited-edition coins released by the Royal Australian Mint in 2021 and 2024.
Lizzie was voiced by British-Australian actress and singer Dame Olivia Newton-John.
Get to Know: The Design and Symbolism
Lizzie, the frill-necked Lizard, was designed by Matthew Hattan and Jozef Szekeres. The name of the mascot was chosen by students through a vote. The frill of the Paralympic mascot, coloured in green and gold and in the shape of Australia, represents the country, with the ochre body mirroring the colour of the land. Lizzie’s strong will and determined attitude symbolise all Paralympic athletes competing in the Games.
