World Para Athletics learnt with great sadness about the loss of Iranian thrower Rashid Masjedi at the age of 35.

A world champion in the men’s shot put F53 at the 2023 Para Athletics World Championships in Paris, Masjedi was set to defend his title at this year’s World Championships in Kobe.

He made his international debut in 2021 at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai. Last year, Masjedi also won a gold medal in the men’s shot put F53 at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou setting a new Asian record (8.73m).

He added another Asian Para Games medal to his collection taking a bronze in the men’s discus throw F53.

World Para Athletics sends its deepest condolences to Rashid Masjedi’s family and friends, and to the entire Para athletics community in Iran.
