Boston Marathon 2025: Eighth win for Marcel Hug, second title for Susannah Scaroni
'It means a lot to me to win this year, on the 50th anniversary of wheelchair racing here,' says Hug after meeting Bob Hall, pioneer of the first official wheelchair race in Boston and designer of Hug's early racing chair 22 Apr 2025
It was a special Monday (21 April) in Boston as the 129th edition of the Boston Marathon celebrated the 50th anniversary of Bob Hall becoming the race’s first official wheelchair finisher. Hall also designed one of the first chairs used by this year’s winner in the men’s division, Marcel Hug of Switzerland. USA’s Susannah Scaroni triumphed in the women’s race.
Hug took an early lead over Daniel Romanchuk of the United States, going on to cross the line in 1:21:34 for his eighth win in Boston. Romanchuk, a two-time champion, finished second in 1:25:58, with Jetze Plat of the Netherlands third in 1:30:16.
“One of my first racing chairs was a Hall chair,” said Hug, who over the weekend got to meet the pioneer who went on to design them. “I used his chair in my first international competition. It means a lot to me to meet him and to win here this year, on the 50th anniversary of wheelchair racing in Boston.”
For the women, Scaroni fell behind Eden Rainbow-Cooper of Great Britain and Manuela Schaer and Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland early, playing catch-up until Mile 5.
The quartet worked together for about 10 miles until Scaroni – a strong climber – surged just before the Newton Hills to her second Boston victory, in 1:35:20. In her debut here, 2024 Paralympic marathon gold medallist Debrunner was second, in 1:37:26, with four-time Boston champion Schaer third in 1:39:18.
“There was that tiny bit of worry,” said Scaroni, about making up that early deficit. “I had to tell myself, ‘I can do this, I can do this.’”
On recapturing the title she won in 2023 after being injured and unable to compete last year, the USA athlete said:
“It feels honestly pretty surreal still. Really, really grateful. I think today was just a blessing and I echo a lot of what Marcel [Hug] said. It's always awesome to be here in Boston. And soyeah, to get to win today against an awesome field, I'm really grateful.”
Kenya’s John Korir won the men’s able-bodied race (2:04:45) joining his brother Wesley who won the title back in 2012. Sharon Lokedi also from Kenya won the women’s able-bodied event with a 2:17:22 finish.
