British and French Athletes Win at World Rowing Championships

Britain's Paralympian Tom Aggar dominated the Men’s Single Scull final to win gold at the 2010 World Rowing Championships in Lake Karapiro, New Zealand.

"It feels fantastic", said Aggar, who won by 13 seconds on Thursday.

Following Aggar in the men’s competition were Ukraine’s Andrii Kryvchun, New Zealand’s Daniel McBride, Russia’s Alexey Chuvashev, France’s Pascal Daniere and Brazil’s Luciano Luna de Oliveira.

For the Women’s Single Scull, France’s Nathalie Benoit took first with a finish of 6:43.18. Following Benoit were Brazil’s Claudia Santos, Portugal’s Filomena Franco, Hungary’s Monika Lengyel and Italy’s Tiziana Leobruni.

Great Britain’s Helene Raynsford was withdrawn from the final because of breathing problems.

In the mixed adaptive coxed four final, Great Britain led until the last 100m when Canada went past and held on to win by half a second.

"I wasn't sure where we had finished as we crossed the line", said Great Britain’s Kate Jones. "They were better than us on the day and it was a good race."

Following Canada and Great Britain were teams from Germany, Ukraine, Ireland and USA.

The 2010 World Rowing Championships are taking place until 7 November.
