The heats on day three of the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships yielded a further three world records at the Parc Jean Drapeau in Montreal, Canada.

 

Russian Dmitri Kokarev was the first of the morning to become the fastest in the world in heat two of the men’s 50m backstroke S2 (59.42 seconds), taking over a second off the previous record of 1.00.90 set by China’s Yang Yang at London 2012. Ukarinian Serhii Palamarchuk and Greece’s Aristeidis Makrodimitris complete the top three heading into the final.

 

Chinese Paralympic champion Qing Xu qualified fastest in his 50m freestyle S6 (30.01 seconds), ahead of Columbian Nelson Crispin and Tao Zheng, with less than a second separating the three.

 

It was then the turn of three world champions to head out in their heats, beginning with Great Britain’s Eleanor Simmonds. Simmonds only managed fourth fastest in her 50m freestyle S6 heat, behind German rival Tanja Groepper, USA’s Noga Nir-Kistler and Italian Emanuela Romano.

 

Brazilian world champion Daniel Dias heads comfortably into the men’s 50m backstroke S5 (37.99 seconds) final, with Brit Andrew Mullen second and 23 year-old Australian Cameron Leslie in third.

 

World champion and world record holder Nataliia Prologaieva qualified fastest in the 50m backstroke S5 (41.98 seconds), ahead of Czech Katerina Liskova and France’s Anita Fatis.

 

Brit Josef Craig head’s into the men’s 50m freestyle S7 final fourth fastest, whilst Australia's Matthew Levy qualifies in first and British bronze medallist from London 2012 Matthew Walker in second. Fresh from his gold medal in the 50m freestyle S7 yesterday evening Ukrainian Yevheniy Bohodayko comes in third.

 

Cortney Jordan will be also be hoping to add to her gold medal from Monday evening after qualifying fastest in the 50m freestyle S7 (34.18 seconds), the event she won silver in at London 2012. Ukrainian Ani Palian qualifies in second and Great Britain’s Susannah Rodgers in third.

 

The second world record of the morning fell in the women’s 50m freestyle S3 heat to Kazakstani Zulfiya Gabidullina (47.40 seconds). Previous world record holder China’s Jiangbo Xia set a new Asian record (47.98 seconds) for second qualifying spot and Ukrainian silver medallist from London 2012 Olga Sviderska qualified third.

 

British brothers Oliver and Sam Hynd go head-to-head in the men’s 400m freestyle S8 tonight, after qualifying first and second fastest respectively, ahead of China’s London 2012 gold medallist Yinan Wang.

 

New Zealand’s Sophie Pascoe is looking to improve on her silver at London 2012, and is already on her way, setting a new Oceania record (1:18.14). She leads Ukrainian Paralympic champion Khrystyna Yurchenko and the Netherland’s Chantalle Zjiderveld into tonight’s final.

 

Korean In Kook Lee pipped reigning Paralympic champion Marc Evers to the fastest qualifying time in the men’s 100m backstroke S14, missing out on a new world record by 0.01 seconds. Great Britain’s Aaron Moores completes the top trio.

 

Three was the magic number in the women’s 100m backstroke S14, as a third world record of the morning was set by the Netherland’s Marlou van der Kulk (1:07.02). Ireland’s Paralympic Champion Bethany Firth won her heat to qualify for this evening’s final second fastest. Brits Chloe Davies and Jessica-Jane Applegate also qualify.

 

The 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships run from 12-18 August and feature around 500 of the world's best athletes from nearly 60 countries - the biggest gathering of swimmers since London 2012.
