Get to Know: The Design and Symbolism
Sondre’s design is based on the trolls depicted in Scandinavian folklore. The skiing troll with one leg was created following a nationwide competition among schools. School children in Norway submitted their design ideas, with Janne Solem winning the contest. The final mascot was created by Norwegian artist Tor Lindrupsen.
In a separate competition, the name “Sondre” was chosen for the Paralympic mascot as a reference to Sondre Norheim, one of the pioneers of modern skiing.
