World Para Ice Hockey, the fastest growing Paralympic winter sport, has announced it will host the first-ever World Para Ice Hockey Officiating Camp to train and evaluate promising future officials, referees and linespersons from around the world to further develop the sport.
The camp will be hosted by the Korea Ice Hockey Association from 14-18 November at the Gangneung Hockey Centre, the same venue that hosted the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games competition.
“We invite all interested potential future officials to join us in Korea to develop their skills and knowledge of Para ice hockey,” said Michelle Laflamme, World Para Ice Hockey Senior Manager. “Without our sport’s incredible officials, we would not be able to host our calendar of events each year, and with a larger officiating pool, we will be able to grow our sport even further.”
The camp will consist of classroom sessions, video analysis, game simulation, skating training and evaluation. It will be led by long-time globally experienced World Para Ice Hockey officials Jacob Grumsen and Matt Fergenbaum, and participation is open to male and female officials, referees and linespersons.
“As Para ice hockey continues to grow, it is imperative to continue to develop, train and teach officials from all over the world to keep up with the increasing speed and physicality of the sport we all love so much,” said Fergenbaum.
Officials interested should contact World Para Ice Hockey for further details at info@WorldParaIceHockey.org and can register online here.
World Para Ice Hockey’s strategic priority is to introduce the sport to as many countries as possible, and that includes everyone from athletes to coaches to officials through various development initiatives such as the Officiating Camp. Already in the last two years, World Para Ice Hockey recruited all-women ’s officiating crews for the first two editions of the Women’s World Challenge to simultaneously develop female athletes and female officials to grow the sport
