Korean Wins APC Athletes’ Representative Vote

Multi-Paralympic Medal winner in Shooting, Korean Im Yeon Kim, has won the Asian Paralympic Committee’s (APC) Athletes’ Representatives election after polling twice as many votes as the nearest candidate.

Im Yeon Kim will now represent the views of athletes on the APC’s Executive Board for the next four years.

On Thursday (16 December) all athletes attending the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Para Games in China were invited to cast their vote from a choice of three candidates at the Athlete’s Village.

The results were as follows:

Im Yeon Kim (Korea) 67.3 per cent

Mutaz Al-Juneidi (Jordan) 25.6 per cent

Beijing Paralympic Games bronze medalist in Powerlifting

Mohammad Reza (Iran) 7.1 per cent

In addition to her new role Im Yeon Kim is the Chairperson of the APC and Korean Paralympic Committee’s (KPC) Athletes’ Councils and Vice President of the KPC.

In the build-up to the election Im Yeon Kim said she would like to establish Athletes’ Councils in each NPC and try make every athletes representative in each NPC act as a real member of the Paralympic Movement.

Malini Rajasegaran, the APC’s Secretary General said: “We would like to congratulate Im Yeon Kim on winning the election. She has a long history of representing the views of athletes through the Athlete’s Council and I am sure she will do the same in her new role.

“We look forward to working with her as she campaigns for the expansion and development of the athlete’s rights and their welfare.”

The Asian Paralympic Committee will hold its General Assembly tomorrow (18 December) in Guangzhou, China where elections will take place to determine its new Executive Board.
