The Mexican Paralympic Committee announced the 66-strong delegation that will compete at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
In athletics, women’s shot put F57 three-time world and Parapan American champion Angeles Ortiz will go for her second Paralympic gold, whilst Daniela Velasco seeks to improve on her bronze medal from London in the women’s 400m T12. 17-year-old Eliezer Gabriel will try to build on his gold medal-performance at last year’s Parapan Ams and reach the podium.
The football 5-a-side team will make its Paralympic debut in Rio, where it will face Argentina, China and Russia in a tough-looking Group B.
Mexico’s medal hope rest with the judo team. Eduardo Avila Sanchez aims to win his third Paralympic medal in the men’s -81kg, after claiming gold at Beijing 2008 and bronze at London 2012, whilst 2008 Paralympics silver medallist Lenia Ruvalcaba is hoping to climb onto the Paralympic podium again in the women’s -70kg.
Two-time powerlifting Paralympic champion Amalia Perez will look to continue her run in the women’s up to 61kg, as will triple Parapan American champion Perla Barcenas in the women’s over 86kg.
In swimming, Mexico will also seek golds from multi-Paralympic champions Gustavo Sanchez, Juan Ignacio Reyes and Nely Miranda.
