Meet Aster - the Torino 2006 Paralympic Winter Games Mascot

Aster, the mascot of the Torino 2006 Paralympic Winter Games, is a friendly snowflake. As snowflakes are unique, so are the athletes competing in the Paralympic Games. This idea is echoed by Aster, who represents the unique way an individual can practice sport, as well as their unique way of life. Aster was a star of the show for the Paralympic Games and guided the athletes and audiences with enthusiasm.

Get to Know: The Designer

Aster the snowflake was introduced to the public on 9 March 2005 by the Torino 2006 Organising Committee. The Organising Committee held an international mascot selection contest to find the mascots for Torino 2006 Winter Games. It received 237 ideas from many companies and individuals. Both Aster and its Olympic counterparts Neve and Gliz were designed by Portuguese artist Pedro Albuquerque, who submitted the winning proposal. The name Aster is derived from the Latin word for “star”.
