The International Paralympic Committee’s TikTok account has broken 4 million followers, making it one of the most popular accounts in world sport.

Launched in 2020, the @Paralympics account is led by a Paralympian and has quickly amassed a cult global following due to its highly engaging, humorous, and often quirky insight into Paralympic sport.

By mid-July 2024, there have been more than 1.8 billion video views on the channel, with one video featuring handcyclists lined up on the start line at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games amassing nearly 77 million views.

Craig Spence, the IPC’s Chief Brand and Communications Officer, said: “We are absolutely delighted that the @Paralympics account has quickly become one of the most popular and widely engaged TikTok accounts in world sport, engaging a much younger demographic in Paralympic sport. As we edge closer to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games interest has increased rapidly with the number of followers increasing by 20 per cent in the last 90 days.

“Our recipe for success has been showcasing the fantastic sporting skills of Paralympians, highlighting matters that are unique to Paralympic sport, and showing - like in any other sport - the mishaps that do happen from time to time. The account is a mix of humour and celebration, sparking discussion and interest in Paralympic sport and disability issues around the world.

“No one understands disability better than a person with a disability, and having a Paralympian as the lead producer of the account has ensured an authentic, relatable, and fun feel to the content, reaching new audiences.

“The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games are the biggest platform on earth to put persons with disabilities front and centre. We have big plans for the Paralympic Games and look forward to bringing to life our plans with TikTok in the coming weeks and months.”

Rollo Goldstaub, TikTok’s Global Head of Sports Partnerships, said: "Since joining TikTok in 2020, the @Paralympics account has utilised a combination of humour, trends and sounds to shine a light on Paralympians and the Paralympics. This relatable content has broken down barriers and educated their community. We're excited to see the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games come to life on TikTok.”

In addition to having more than 1.8 billion views in just four years, content on the @Paralympics TikTok account has achieved more than 159.7 million likes, making it the most engaged account in world sport with regards to followers/likes. The content has also received 10.1 million shares, 170.9 million engagements and generated 1.2 million comments.
