Paris 2024: Yang Yue celebrates long-awaited shot put gold
After silver medal in four consecutive Paralympic Games, Chinese thrower finally finishes on top of the podium on a Sunday morning with another gold to China and Portugal's first Paralympic title at Paris 2024 01 Sep 2024
No other China picked more gold medals than China on Sunday morning at the Stade de France, day three of the Para athletics programme at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Shi Yiting triumphed in the morning’s sole track final, the women’s 200m T36, while in the women’s discus F64 Yang Yue out-threw defending champion and teammate Yao Juan.
It was Ytting's third consecutive gold in the event. Danielle Aitchison of New Zealand finished second and Australia's Mali Lovell in third.
In the discus F64, after taking at Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020, Yang could finally celebrate the long-awaited gold.
“I’m so happy to win this gold medal. I started discus throwing when I was 18 years old, and now I’m already 42. I want to tell my daughter this: it pays to persevere. If you persevere for long enough, your dreams may just come true," the Chinese thrower said.
Portugal and Georgia claimed their first medal at Paris 2024 at Stade de France this morning while Ukraine's Oksana Zubkovska defended the women’s long jump T12 crown that she holds since the Beijing 2008 Games.
Miguel Monteiro of Portugal broke the Paralympic record to win the men’s shot put F40 (11.21m).
“To be honest, I didn’t really think or look at it (the record mark). I was just paying attention to the next throws, because I knew the other athletes were also capable of doing better. So I was just looking at that. Luckily, I was the one with the record. I’m very happy with it (laughing),” Monteiro said.
“The goal was always to win a medal and I’m so happy I did it. It’s been a special feeling, it’s emotional.”
