Cartwright and O’Hanlon win Athletics Australia awards

“London was amazing and I would be lying if I said that I didn’t want to back this up at World Championships next year.”

Kelly Cartwright and Evan O’Hanlon were named Female and Male Athletes with a Disability of the Year on Friday (7 December) at Athletics Australia’s awards ceremony.

Cartwright earned her accolade after winning a gold medal in the long jump F42/44 and a silver in the 100m T42 sprint at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

“London was amazing and I would be lying if I said that I didn’t want to back this up at World Championships next year,” Cartwright told Athletics Australia.

“I just really want to thank my coach and my family for their support. Tim (Matthews) puts up with the many different versions of Kelly, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”

O’Hanlon won two gold medals and set two world records in the 100m and 200m T38 sprints in London.

“This year has been great,” O’Hanlon told Athletics Australia. “I would have liked three gold medals in London if I am going to be honest, but one of my events wasn’t on the card this year.

“The World Championships, more gold medals and world records will always be the aim, but I will sit down with my coach Iryna (Dvoskina) and see what we can come up with to achieve that. She’s my personal assistant, psychologist, second mum and coach, and for that reason I am so proud to present her with my 100m gold medal tonight.”

Dvoskina, meanwhile, received the Australian Sports Commission Athletes with a Disability Coach of the Year award.
