Sixteen-year-old Anastasiya Dmytriv completed her medal set in her Paralympic debut adding the Games gold to her world and European titles on Friday (30 August) at the Paris La Defense Arena.

The Spanish swimmer was one of the stars of day two in Para swimming, in an afternoon session in which China smashed two world records and British and Dutch swimmers also topped the podium twice.

Dmytriv beat Great Britain’s world record holder Brock Whinston to win the women’s 100m breaststroke SB8 gold in 1:19.75.

“I am really proud and happy for the work I have done. I wanted to do it the best possible way. Now I have more experience than I had at the World Championships and I can enjoy more,” said Dmytriv, who admitted he was a bit shy in front of some journalists waiting to talk to her.

For China’s Yang Hong the gold in the men’s 200m individual medley SM6 was also the first of his career, but in his third Games. Fourth in Tokyo 2020 and fifth at Rio 2016 in the same event, he not only claimed his first title but did it with a new world record (2:37.31).

"I didn't know if I could break the world record, but I tried my best," Hong said. "I really wanted to win the gold medal because I've participated in three Paralympic Games but this is the first time I've won gold. I am so excited."

China took another gold in the last event of the day also with a world record. Peng Qiuping, Yuan Weiyi, Jiang Yuyan and Guo Jincheng formed the relay team that took gold in the mixed 4x50m freestyle relay 20 points clocking 2:14.98.

“It's more fun winning in a team. It's more meaningful. You need to help your teammates," said Lu Dong, who help the team in the morning heat.

An emotional Maisie Summers-Newton was responsible for one of Great Britain’s two triumphs on Friday.

"I put so much pressure on myself. I was super nervous, but the nerves obviously work in some situations," said the 22-year-old. “The crowd's been amazing and seeing family there at a Paralympic Games will be a memory none of us will ever forget. I think that was another reason I was nervous.”

The second British gold on day two was the second for Tulley Kearney, this time in the women’s 100m freestyle S5.

Dutch S11 swimmer Liesette Bruinsma took her second 400m freestyle S11 Paralympic title and just 40 minutes later Chantalle Zijderveld put the Netherlands again on top defending her gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB9.

Czechia, Israel, Italy, Ukraine and USA claimed the other gold medals at La Defense Arena on Friday.
