The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) will organise events and exhibitions showcasing Para sports in August and September 2024 as part of the third anniversary celebrations of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

“Tokyo Parasports Month” events are held to promote Para sports in the two months, offering people the opportunity to experience different sports and get to know Para athletes.

More than 4,000 athletes competed at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, which took place between 24 August-5 September 2021. Hosts Japan won 51 medals, including 13 golds.

On 24 August, the third anniversary of the Opening Ceremony, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government No. 1 Building and other facilities in the capital will be lit in red, blue, and green, the colours of the Agitos, the Paralympic symbol. This will also continue during the Paris 2024 Paralympics, from 28 August to 8 September.

Tokyo Parasports Month

Three Tokyo Parasports Month initiatives will be organised in the capital simultaneously to promote the excitement of Para sports.

People can experience Para sports at commercial facilities and other venues in the capital. Participants will be able to try competing in a racing wheelchair and send messages of support to Para athletes. An exhibition related to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will also be held at several shopping malls.

As part of the “Parasport in the Office” initiative, images and parasport equipment will be displayed in the lobbies of office buildings. Ten companies will participate in this project, which will run from late July to mid-September.

“Tokyo Parasports Forward” event will serve as the grand finale of the Parasports Month. On 22 September, Para athletes will gather at the Bellesalle Akihabara to show their sports and participate in talk sessions, joined by famous voice actors Hiro Shimono and Ayane Sakura.

Fans will have the chance to meet Tokyo 2020 mascots Miraitowa and Someity, and also try out nine Para sports.

Other initiatives and events will be organised in Tokyo later this year. Learn more about Tokyo Parasports Month by visiting the Tokyo Metropolitan Government website
