Paris 2024: Ones to watch in Para table tennis

With the countdown to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games well and truly in the final stages, our Sport Weeks provide you with the perfect guide to each of the competitions being contested in France. To round off this week, here are the Para table tennis players to look out for when the Games open on 28 August. 

 

Fabien Lamirault (France)

The reigning Paralympic singles class 2 champion and four-time world champion is in perfect form to make it three titles in a row at his fourth Games on home soil at Paris 2024.

 

Alexandra Saint Pierre (France)

The European number one and world number two in the singles class 5 is another home hope at Paris 2024. She is looking to add Paralympic gold to her first world title on her Games debut.

 

Giada Rossi (Italy)

She is the reigning world champion in both singles and doubles class 1-2 and is aiming to upgrade her double Paralympic bronze to gold at Paris 2024, her second Games. 

 

Maryna Lytovchenko (Ukraine)

The two-time world and European singles class 6 champion is the current world number one, putting her in prime position to defend her Paralympic title from Tokyo 2020 in Paris.

 

Aida Dahlen (Norway)

The multi-Worlds medallist and current world number one in the women’s singles class 8 heads to her fourth Games still in search of a first Paralympic title, having won bronze at Tokyo 2020.

 

Kayode Alabi (Nigeria)

One of the breakout players from the African continent after winning double gold at the 2023 African Championships. Paris will be his Paralympic debut as one half of Nigeria’s Para table tennis power-couple. 

 

Christiana Alabi (Nigeria)

She is the partner of Kayode Alabi and a three-time African Championships medallist, who won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games ahead of her Paralympic debut in Paris.

 

Najlah Al Dayyeni (Iraq) 

@Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games

She secured her place at Paris 2024 by winning women’s singles class 6 gold at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games. The Iraqi teenager will be competing at her second Paralympics. 

 

Katsuyoshi Yagi (Japan)

@ITTF

The Japanese player raised his level last season, beating Chinese superstars Yan Shuo and Liao Keli en route to winning the men’s singles class 7 tournament at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games. Paris 2024 will Yagi’s second Paralympic Games.

 

Chen Po-yen (Chinese Taipei)

Chen, who competes in class 11, booked his first ticket to the Paralympics by capturing the men’s singles at the Virtus Global Games 2023 in France.
