Marrakech Grand Prix: Two new world records and several moments of glory
Tunisia's Paralympic star Maroua Ibrahmi and Italy’s Carlo Fabio Marcello Calcagni improve own world records even as Aymane El Haddaoui leads hosts Morocco to top medal standings at the Grande Stade de Marrakech 28 Apr 2025
The Marrakech 2025 World Para Athletics Grand Prix lived up to the great expectations, with world records shattered and the star-studded home team dominating the medal standings at the Grande Stade de Marrakech.
Tunisian Paralympic great Maroua Ibrahmi stood by her billing clinching the gold medal in women’s club throw F32 and a silver in women’s shot put F32 events.
Her throw in the women’s club throw F32 finals was also 0.36ms better than her world record show in Paris 2024. It was the same event where Ibrahmi has won four Paralympic gold medals.
Italy’s Carlo Fabio Marcello Calcagni, the Kobe 2024 world champion, also impressed with a formidable show in the men’s 100m T72 event. Calcagni improved his own world record mark by 0.47 seconds enroute to taking the gold in 14.92 in Morocco.

Over 330 athletes from 51 delegations including 21 African nations and hosts Morocco will take centre stage at the Grande Stade de Marrakech from 🗓️24 to 26 April.

Top of medals
Otherwise, the hosts topped the standings with total of 36 medals. Led by their Paris 2024 champion Aymane El Haddaoui who clinched two victories, Morocco accumulated 10 gold medals over the three-day event that culminated on 26 April.
El Haddaoui achieved a season best timing of 46.84 to take the gold in men’s 400m T47, an event he holds the world record at 46.65 seconds from Paris 2024.
The sprinter also attained a season best timing in the men’s 100m T47, an even in which claimed bronze for Morocco at Paris 2024.
Kenya and Saudi Arabia followed the home team with seven gold medals each.

International stars
Among other international nations, Jordan’s Tokyo 2020-star Ahmad Hindi put up a strong show in men’s shot put F34 throwing 11.72m for gold.
Hindi holds the world record for the event at 12.25m achieved at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
India’s biggest star at the Grand Prix – Rio 2016 gold medallist Mariyappan Thangavelu, who is also a bronze medallist at Paris in men’s high jump T42 – settled with silver medals with personal best jumps in men’s high jump T42/T44 and men’s long jump T42/T44 events.
Thangavelu is one of India's medal hopefuls as the country gears up to host its first World Para Athletics Championships this September.
Malaysia’s Paris 2024 silver medallist Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli made sure of leaving Morocco with some amazing results as he signed off with the men’s shot put F20 gold with a personal best throw of 14.54m.
Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games champion Goodness Chiemerie Nwachukwu clinched two of the four gold medals Nigeria won in Marrakech, as she achieved personal best in the women's discus throw and shot put F42 events.

What’s next?
After the excitement in a sunny Marrakech, the Grand Prix now heads to the Americas – with Jalisco in Mexico followed by Cali in Colombia as host cities.
This will be followed by Nottwil and Paris in Europe, Tunisia in Africa and the All-Women's Grand Prix in Olomouc, Czechia.
